(Religion), Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic

At Peace Lutheran, religion, reading, language, and math are considered our “core” academic subjects. Every year we review what we can do to improve our academic content. Sometimes this means changing what text is used. We also look to find supplements (“add-ons”) to make a particular area one of our strengths. The faculty annually reviews our curriculum cycle to determine what area should next receive our focus. We recently decided to switch reading and math in our curriculum cycle because we feel math is a higher overall priority for this year’s annual review. We also use inservices to deal with topical studies like bullying and academic innovations to keep Peace’s program at the front of those found in Antigo.

It shouldn’t be surprising that one of the “calls” of education circles today is to “get back to the basics” or fundamentals. Many recent studies and more likely, your personal experiences, seem to show that things many of us identify as normal expected functions for young people can no longer be taken for granted. Simple math functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division once accepted as basic skills are no longer considered necessary in some general educations. Have you had a young person try to count change back for you lately? Many students no longer consider speaking and writing necessary skills. The  “short cuts” people use in common communication have become standard errors in writing.  Students find it more difficult to convey a thought and write a complete sentence.  Newspapers share content at a fourth grade level so that the average reader can read them.

Finally, as general education seems to get “watered down,” we must demand that traditional standards of excellence be maintained. As Christians, we also have become the annoying exception rather than the rule. In a country founded on faith, it has become far more commonplace to find people pushing faith out of education rather than embracing the values that used to be the standard in America.

HOMEWORK HELPS

As we begin the 3rd quarter, students tend to have more schoolwork and projects that become "homework."  Here's some ideas to help!

WHAT'S THE POINT?

Independent practice is

important, not only to practice academic skills or review material, but it provides benefits in teaching important life skills such as:

     Following directions

    • Independent work habits

  • Time management
  • Use of strategies
  • Follow-through
  • Responsibility

Keep in mind that you and your child are laying an important foundation that will guide his/her routines for years to come. Starting in early elementary school years, each child begins to establish habits for time management and task completion. Our goal is to help teach and firmly establish these life-long skills.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Important factors for

completing homework

include:

1. Location (Consider noise level & distractions)

2. Materials and Supplies

3. Dedicated time for schoolwork

4. Organization for turning in

Take time to consider your household routine and how you can help your child be successful.  Remember...  it's THEIR homework to complete.  Your job is to provide a place, a time, a routine, and limited support.     (Adapted from the LDonline website)

Mission News: Chapel   Jan/Feb mission project:   "Caring across Continents: Peru"  This is the Hearts for Jesus campaign this year in our North Wisconsin District.  Money collected will assist families in Peru establish and maintain guinea pig farms.

Peace Matching Gifts.. We're almost there!!

Help fund any of 3 special projects at our church and school:

1) Continued updating of our school curriculum

2) Seed money for expansion of the early childhood ministry (We are beginning a 3 year old program next school year.)

3) Pay down on short term debt.

Funds given at this time to any of these 3 projects will be matched dollar for dollar up to a total of $10,000.

We are ONLY $1,200.00 away from meeting this challenge!   Please consider helping us in response to the blessings God has given you.

SCRIP Challenge

We are kicking off a NEW SCRIP Challenge.  This January and February, all general fund earnings from SCRIP gas and grocery sales will be used to purchase sports equipment for our school.  Please remember that the General Funds account is what is left after your 50% is taken for tuition and 10% taken for missions.  Please join us in earning as much money as we can for our school.

To help you gear up for spring break, in the months of March and April,  all proceeds earned from travel (hotels) and restaurants will be added to the total. In May and June, we will focus on SCRIP from home improvement and décor.  Please contact the office if you have questions.

SHINING THE LIGHT OF PEACE

We are pleased to announce, due to the wonderful support of our Peace families and surrounding community, our profits after expenses will total around $33,000.  We cannot express our gratitude enough for the support of each and every person that made this event a success.  In addition, we are excited to announce that we will be able to make over a $3,000 donation to the Community Health Foundation in an effort to give back to our community.

 Peace Matching Gift Opportunity

Peace has again received a generous "above and beyond" matching gift opportunity.  A member of Peace would like to encourage other members and friends of our congregation to consider a special gift at this time to help fund any of 3 special projects at our church and school:

1) Continued updating of our school curriculum

(Science and Reading)

2) Seed money for expansion of the early childhood ministry

3) Pay down on short term debt.

Funds given at this time to any of these 3 projects will be matched dollar for dollar up to a total of $10,000.  If God has blessed you in such a way that you can make a special gift at this time, we thank you in advance for your continued support of our Lord's work  through the ministries of Peace. Gifts can be labeled "special matching gift" and placed in the offering or turned into the school  office at your convenience.

BIG DIFFERENCE!

So far this school year, we sent in 13,443 points.  These points will be redeemed for art supplies, p.e. equipment, and other school supplies.  Thank you to everyone who collects Campbells labels.  Keep collecting those labels!  Updated product lists are available outside the school office and at the information center.

Box Tops for Education - Keep those Box Tops coming in!  In December we received a check for $854.70 for our fall submission!  Great Job!  The money that comes in through Box Tops is used for the library and AR (Accelerated Reader).  Each Box Top is worth $0.10 for the school.  Did you know that since 2002 we have been able to raise over $6,000 for our school?  Questions?  Go to www.boxtops4education.com to find out more information, or just look for the Box Top stamp on products you currently use - clip the stamp, and bring it in - automatic $0.10!  Keep up the great work!

Using "Goodsearch"

We would like to thank all of you who have used "Goodsearch" as a search engine throughout the past year.  As a result we have received a check for $159, which is double the amount from last year!  This money is used for upgrading our school textbooks.  It may not seem like a lot, however every little bit helps!  For more information on using "Goodsearch" as your search engine, please visit www.goodsearch.com and choose Peace Lutheran Church and School (Antigo WI) as your designated charity or contact Nikki at n.heinzen@peaceantigo.org.

What’s in a New Year?

Every year as the world moves forward into the start of a new year, people plot and plan about what they are going to do to improve the upcoming year. There is nothing wrong with trying to improve. Changing what we do or how we try to meet a goal tells us a little about how usually our intent is good but the end result sometimes “gets lost” in the process as the new year unfolds. Often times, by the time the next New Year comes around we ask ourselves when we failed to meet our New Year’s resolutions.

Contrast all this change with the consistency that we find in our Lord. We know that He will never leave us “hanging” but instead He is with us whenever we call upon Him. God’s rules remain the same throughout our lives. He declares what is right and wrong and “sticks with” what He has said.

While God’s law constantly points to our guilt, which isn’t a good feeling for anyone, His rules don’t change as time passes. What does comfort us is the forgiveness that is equally given to us at no cost. All we need to do is to confess our need and ask for God’s help. Mr. Kuske
