New for 2009 - 2010
Part of our 3 year ministry plan is for Peace Lutheran School to move from half day to full day kindergarten. As we do this, we then need room and a teacher for the Pre-Kindergarten. Last week the Peace Voter’s Assembly approved the plan to move from the present 3-day Pre-K to a 4-day 4 K program still in the afternoon. In order to do this with the present staff and rooms we will be using a format that we had five years ago. In the morning both 1st grade and 2nd grade will be taught in separate rooms by separate teachers. In the afternoon, the two grades will be housed in one room with one of the teachers. The other teacher will teach the 4- Kindergarten program 4 days a week. That means that the first and second grades will have their language arts and math in the morning. In the afternoon, when we often combine these grades for music and gym class, they will be combined. Religion, science and art can easily be taught to both grades together.

School Closings * Late Starts * Early Dismissals
Peace follows the Antigo Unified District in weather related closings. Broadcast is on the Antigo radio stations, cable and Wausau/ Rhinelander TV and radio.
For a two hour delay students should not arrive at school until at least 9:30. We will still have Kindergarten class from 10:00 - 11:30. If it is deemed necessary to close school early, as much notification as possible will be given over radio and TV. Students who walk or ride in cars will also be allowed to make phone calls, if necessary.

PTC - Parent / Teacher / Child Consultations The second quarter will end on January 22. We have Wednesday, the 28th and Thursday, the 29th designated for consultations from 3:15 - 7:00.
A.R. Goals - How are you coming on your goal for second quarter? Are you at least half way there? This week is the half way point for second quarter. We hope 100% of the students will earn their individual reading goal for second quarter. The last day to test is Jan. 22nd. Happy Reading!

Basketball
The season has started. In games at St. Peter, Schofield, our girls won and both the B boys and A boys came out on the short end of the score. The A boys competed in the All Saints tournament taking third place. They lost to All Saints, beat Menominee Tribal and Nativity Catholic, and lost again to All Saints. Both the A and B boys then defeated Menominee Tribal School.

MANNERS MATTER!
Try four easy ways to teach kids how to behave © 2002 By Dr. Charles Fay
In all parts of their lives, children with great manners have a powerful advantage over those who do not. They make friends easier, get along better with their teachers, and eventually make much better employees and spouses. Here are four techniques that will give your child this lifelong gift:
Tip No. 1: Make a list
Sit down with your kids and make a list of the specific behaviors polite people display. Have fun with this activity. Your written list might look something like:
• Say “please” and “thank you”
• Eat with their mouths closed
• Burp in the privacy of their own rooms
• Say “excuse me”
• Hold doors open for people
Tip No. 2: Model these manners
Children learn much more from our actions than from our words.
Tip No. 3: Provide kids what they want only when they use manners
When parents use Love and Logic, they don’t waste their breath lecturing about good manners. Instead, they very politely refuse to provide what their kids want unless they hear a sweet “please” or “thank you” and see the other behaviors on their “manner list.” For this to work, parents must respond to requests with polite sadness instead of anger or sarcasm. For example, a parent might say in a sad tone of voice, “This is such a bummer. We can’t go to the movies today because you need more practice with manners first.” A parent who sets this limit, avoids anger or sarcasm, and holds firm by staying home will see a very upset child in the short-term and a much happier, more responsible one in the long-term.
Tip No. 4: Expect them to repay you for any embarrassment they cause
If your child continues to be rude, he or she may need to repay you for the embarrassment or inconvenience created. With genuine empathy and sadness, a parent might say, “How sad! Your rudeness at Aunt Mary’s house really drained the energy out of me. I’ve been too tired to clean the bathrooms. When you get them done, I’m sure I’ll feel a whole lot better.” If the child refuses or forgets to do the chore, wise parents don’t lecture or threaten. Instead, they quietly allow their child to “pay” for their bad manners with one of their favorite toys. Thousands of parents have transformed manner monsters into polite kids who are a pleasure to be around. At one Love and Logic seminar, a parent commented, “When I used these tips, my boys almost immediately started to shape up. They even warned one
of their rather rude friends who was visiting: ‘Better stop burping … Our mom’s gonna make you do chores.’”
Give these Love and Logic tips a try, and see how much fun parenting can be!
